ELVA – Advanced Electric Vehicle Architectures

Mobility sustainable is one amongst grand challenges socially. This is so key topics for automotive industries. This believes in demands on-going of mobility individually. For meeting strict increased traffic growing and targets of emission in urbanized areas, then electro mobility are promising ways. Aim of ELVA projects is bringing line technology’s customer expectations and options for 3rd electric vehicles generations. There is development of vehicle’s innovative architectures which is exploiting fully freedoms in designs being resultant from electric drive trains. After 2 and half years, project ended in 2013 year May month. Results documented on websites serves research communities as future references. Project: Whilst 1st mass produced electric vehicles had been arriving on roads of Europe, mostly all models intended originally being driven by combustion engines. Like electric vehicles, they hold battery and electric motor in place of fuel tank and combustion engine. Such modifications, needs adoptions extensively for integrating batteries in safe and sound manners. Results are reinforcement necessary measuring hindrances for fully exploiting new freedoms in design. This is provided by vehicle’s electrification.

Over 2 and half years consortium of Europe consist of 7 partners having architectures developed for electric vehicles designed particular for drives electrically. Project was known as ELVA. It had been coordinated by (ika) Institute of Automotive Engineering of RWTH Aachen University. 4 of large Europe’s automobile suppliers and manufacturers like Continental, Fiat, Volkswagen and Renault participated in projects. Consortium had been supplemented by Swedish Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre SAFER and IDIADA Automotive Technology from Spain. Project received supports by lots of associations in Europe. This was accompanied by tasks with own experts of theirs. Ambition of 1st project phases was getting better understandings of customer requirement for electric vehicle thereby generating overview detailed of electric vehicle technologies. The drives are available till 2020 year. Based on this, important concepts for city battery driven cars had been developed in creative phases. 3 of these ideas had have been then chosen being designed with details. Then it is evaluated and analyzed afterwards with respect to many key necessary and needed factors. Special features of projects was designing contest where free lanced designers and designed studios and students and different interested parties could participate and take part.

Approach: ELVA project had been aimed for exploring concepts on vehicles being intended for mass productions by executions of broad scopes of conceptual designed studies. This was started by initial design establishment specifications. It was continued right by means of realistic but virtual detailed performance assessments of 3 full vehicle concepts. ELVA had been pre-competitive. It focused on design rules of EVs being launched by 2020. It provided platforms for dialogues between technology for future generation EVs and stakeholders being concerned with components developing. This is there with those involved in creation of those concepts which vehicles need whilst incorporating the technology and components. ELVA finally provided forums for broad communities beyond consortium of project by itself by means of networking with Research and Development (R&D) complementary projects. This is with supports of industrial Advisory Boards. It consisted of high leveled representatives. This is by means of execution of open EV designing competitions. It is through input direct collection from citizens of Europe and large company of Europe and fleet owners of SMEs. This is with regards to EVs expectations. Motivations: Together with energy cost increasing and emission targets stringent that aimed for 95 g/km CO2 emissions , requirement for steps changing in road vehicles propulsion technologies have become apparent.

This is valid especially for urban dense areas with heavy air qualities, high traffic volumes and noises and safety impacts on living environments of people.

Launching of Ducati 959 Panigale in India

Being quite showstopper the Ducati unveils newer 959 Panigale at 2016 IBW (India Bike Week) which should be launched officially ahead in July in this specific year. This is replacement of 899 Panigale. 959 thereby pack in excellent electronics, styling and power for too much performance optimum on tracks and roads. This is 1st appearance of bike in India. Ducati have not chosen more good daises for unveiling this bike.

In considering factors of looks and design Ducati 959 Panigale basically is version updated of 899. It shares fewer qualities along with elder cousins Panigale 1299. Ducati 959 Panigale was 1st unveiled in EICMA last year 2015. This Ducati branded bike namely Ducati 959 Panigale was priced at Rupees 14.04 lakhs. It was front restyled fascia when compared with 899. This branded bike has presently grown wide and tall whilst taking styling and designing cues from the Panigale 1299.

Clusters of head lamps twining are tweaked and design of bike is improved through 899 for offering aerodynamics enhanced. There are sided mounted exhausts in bids of complying with norms of Euro 4 emissions. In equipment and features terms this bike comes with newer clutches with mechanisms of self-servo and newer rear viewing mirrors. Bike has suspensions steeper and wheel bases short with excellent handing improved. Equipment electronic includes controls of engine braking, ABS and traction controls.

Google Driverless Car – A Self-Driving Car

Google Driverless Car is project by company of Google which involves technologies development for electric cars and autonomous cars. Software that powers cars of Google is known as Google Chauffeur. Lettered on each car’s side identifies it to be a “self-driving car”. Presently project is led by engineer of Google company namely Sebastian Thrun who is director former of Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and Google Street View’s co-inventor. Team of Thrun at Stanford made creations to robotic vehicle namely Stanley that won DARPA Grand Challenge of 2005. Its prize of US $2 million was got from United States Department of Defense.

Technology: Robotic cars of Google have $150,000 costs while buying equipment that included $70,000 LIDAR system. Finder of range made top mounting in Velodyne beam laser of 64. Laser allows vehicle for generating 3D map detailed of environment. Car takes maps that are generated and combines it with world’s high resolution maps in turn producing lots of types of models of data which allows it’s driving by itself. On 2014 June, system created working with very inch precision high definition map of that area which is to be driven by driverless car. This includes height of traffic lights and on board systems. Computation being performed on computer farms remotely is done.

Testing of Roads: Team of project has provided equipment to test group of 10 cars at least that included 6 Toyota Prius, 3 Lexus RX 450h and 1 Audi TT. Each of these is accompanied by 1 of dozen drivers who have driving unblemished records in driver seat and by 1 of Google’s engineers in passenger seat.

Commercialization:  At year of 2012 founder of Google namely Sergey Brin made a statement that Self-Driving car of Google will have its availability to general masses in 2017. At year of 2014 above schedule was confirmed by director of project namely Chris Urmson who indicated release possibly from 2017 to 2020. Google has no plans of becoming a manufacturer of car, but company has hopes of developing business that markets data and system behind manufacturers of automobiles. Lawyer from California Department of Motor Vehicles raised concerns which meant that technology is more advanced than law in plenty of areas. As per The New York Times regulators and policy makers have made an argument that there are needed factors of new laws in case driverless cars will come to existence and in reality as per reason that technology is advancing so much that there is danger of existing outstripped law because it may date back to era of carriages horse-driven.

Google has 2 bills lobbing which created Nevada as 1st state where vehicles that are autonomous could be operated legally on roads by public. 1st bill is electric vehicle amendment bill that provided testing and licensing of vehicles that are autonomous. 2nd bill provides ban exemption on driving distracted for permitting sending text messages by occupants whilst to sit at back of wheel. 2 bills were voted for before state legislature session of Nevada ended in 2011 June. There was a speculation that there was selection of Nevada because of Consumer Electronics Show and Las Vegas Auto Show and likelihood highly that company of Google will 1st present commercially viable products at both or either of the 2 events. Executives of Google refuse to reason precisely and state as to why they made choice of Nevada to being maiden state for car that was autonomous.

Nevada made a law in 2011 June that was concerned about autonomous car operation that came to effect on 2012 March 1st. Toyota Prius was modified with experimental Google’s driverless car.

Fuel Cell Vehicles- An Emerging Technology in 2015

FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicles) have potentiality of significant reduction of people’s dependence on low emissions harmful and foreign oil which contributes to change in climates. FCVs operate on not gasoline but hydrogen gas and emitting no tailpipe harmful emissions. Numerous challenges for overcoming will be posed before the FCV becomes competitive with vehicles conventional but benefits potentiality of the technology is quite substantial.

Working of Fuel Cells:

PEM (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane) fuel cells that have usage in automobiles are also known as Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel cells which provide usage of oxygen and hydrogen fuel from air for production of electricity.  Numerous fuel cells have been designed for providing usage in vehicles for production of least of 1.16 volts of electricity that is far from that which is enough for powering a vehicle. So multiple cells are assembled to fuel cell stack. Power potential causing generation of fuel cell stack gives provision to depending on size and number of single fuel cells which comprise surface area and stack of PEM.

Benefits:

Least amount of emissions of Greenhouse Gas: Diesel- and Gasoline-powered vehicles cause emission of GHGs (greenhouse gases) which is mostly CO2 (carbon dioxide) which contributes to change of climate globally. FCV which are powered by hydrogen that is pure emits only water and heat and no GHGs from tailpipe. Production of hydrogen for powering FCV generates GHGs by depending on method of production. But it is lesser than diesel vehicles and conventional gasoline emission.

Reduction of oil depending factors: FCVs cause reduction of depending on foreign oil because hydrogen is derived from sources that are domestic like coal and natural gas and resources that are renewable like biogas, agricultural waste and water. This makes nation’s economy dependent lesser on different nations and lesser vulnerable to shocks of price of oil from increased oil volatile market.

Lessening of air pollutants: Highway vehicles provide emission of share significantly of air pollutants which contributes to harmful and smog particulates in US. FCV power pure hydrogen with no emission of pollutants that are harmful. In case hydrogen has its production from fossil fuels there is production of pollutants but this is lesser than generating amounts caused by tailpipe conventional vehicle emissions.

Challenges: FCVs are not available commercially but few hundreds have evaluating in field tests. Numerous challenges are overcome before FCVs become competitive, successful consumer alternatives.

Cost of vehicle: FCVs are expensive currently than hybrids and conventional vehicles but expenses have significantly decreased and approach goal of DOEs for 2017. There should be lowering of costs of production continuously by manufacturers especially for hydrogen and fuel cell stack storage such that FCVs have competition with technologies that are conventional.

Storage of on board Hydrogen: FCVs give provision for enough storage of hydrogen for travelling at a distance with vehicles of gasoline between fill-ups that is 300 miles to 400 miles. But this should be achieved through numerous vehicle models and makes with no compromise on expectations of customer of safety, cost, performance and space.

Reliability and durability of fuel cell: Systems of fuel cell are not so much durable as IC (Internal Combustion) engines with respect to humidity and temperature ranges. Durability of fuel cell stack in environments of real-world is presently half of which that is required for commercialization. Durability has substantially increased over few past years from 29,000 miles to 75,000 miles. But there is a belief by experts that 150,000 miles lifetime expected is important for FCVs for competing with vehicles of gasoline.

To get hydrogen for consumers: Latest infrastructure for dispensing, producing and delivering hydrogen to people does not support adoption widespread of FCVs.
