The desire of man to fly and conquer the sky like a bird can be traced back in several mentions in the history of mankind. He tried to fly with all possible ways that was known to him. He made artificial wings to fly, tried to make equipments that were similar to birds in the expectation to fly like them. His attempts to fly were depicted in the epics, stories and poems. Great story writers and poets wrote about his relentless effort to fly. By the passage of time he discovered several ways that helped him to fly even better than a bird. Some of the earlier forms of flying equipments include the gliders that reminded the wings of birds, huge hot air balloons, parachutes etc. Those inventions could be used only for short distances of flying.
There was major turning point occurred with the historical invention of air crafts or air planes by the Wright Brothers in the year 1903. After the invention great development was seen in the field of aviation during 1920’s and 1930’s. Soon the field of aviation for the designing, operation, production and development of the air craft. The word aviation was derived from the Latin term “avis” means birds and the suffix-”ation”. The term was introduced by formal naval officer Gabriel La Landelle in the year 1863. During the World War 1 the air crafts were widely used that increased the popularity of air craft in the defense wing of the countries.
The first passenger flight was introduced by Wright Bothers in the year 1908 after their invention of air craft. They took their mechanic Charles Furnas as the first aircraft passenger. After the first and second World Wars the general aviation field found a tremendous demand. The aircrafts have been widely used for Commercial, military and private purposes. The aircraft manufactures began to design and produce aircrafts for the middle class market. Aircraft manufacturers Cessna, Piper, and Beech Craft began to manufacture and produce light aircraft aiming at the middle class market.
Through 1950’s the demand for civil jets became a trend. Boeing 707 became the first passenger jet flight. In 1960’s much more advanced aircraft, supersonic passenger aircraft named as Concorde provided passenger services.
The development in the technology today also reflected in the aviation arena where more efficient engines and composite airframes were introduced. The advanced satellite communication and navigation system enabled the aviation to have wide dimensions.
The cock pit of the aircrafts irrespective of the size of the aircrafts changed remarkably utilizing the new navigation systems. The LED displays, satellite communications, computers and GPS gave more accuracy in finding direction, hindrances, accurate vision of maps even at night or in dim visibility.
In the year 2004 space ship one getting private fund for the manufacturing of space flight that can leave the atmosphere of the earth. Aviation fuel is also begun to be replaced by alternative fuels such as solar energy, gaseous forms of ethanol and electricity. Aviation today is widely used for general aviation for passengers, cargo and military aviation for defense purposes. Civil flying that comes under general aviation includes both commercial and private flying.
Business flights, private aviation, gliding, hang gliders, aerial photography, ballooning, parachuting, charter flights, crop dusting, forest fire fighting, police air patrol and air ambulance comes under general aviation.
Fighter aircrafts, Ground attack air craft, Bombers, Transport aircraft, surveillance and reconnaissance air craft comes under the military aviation.
Air traffic control is used for communication to avoid factors that might involve in collision and for the co-ordination of reports from the pilots for the co-ordination of positions.
The invention of aircrafts definitely created a great impact in the life people today to great extent that enable them to reach any part of the world within a short span of time.
