Is Home Schooling more effective than conventional schooling systems?

The education is one of the important factors that laid the foundation for the progress of human beings in the society in every aspect. The education system had given ample contribution in every civilization and culture. Even though the methods of education vary from one another the main objective of education is to impart knowledge. There are several historical evidences that show the importance of education during the early centuries. People were curious in acquisition of knowledge from scholars or masters. During ancient times master used to teach in a selected place where they taught group of people. These were the earlier form of schools. The necessity of education was realized during the middle of 17th and 18th century. Schooling and its importance were begun to be realized in a wider aspect by people of every class in a society. The power of knowledge was recognized by every one and education became the priority of people in every society. Soon schooling from a young age became an inevitable factor to lead a cultured and civilized life. Several schools were established where students were taught by teachers in various subjects. The unique feature of Indian system of education was the students had to live with their teachers till the completion of their course. Ancient universities in India promoted this type of educational system.

In many parts of the world particularly in the western countries the education system flourished through schools where teachers and tutors taught students. Formal school settings were began to be established. The elementary education became a compulsory criterion for formal education. Even though formal education intended for everyone, during the early phase of 17th and 18th century children belonged to the elite class were tutored at home. The royal families entrusted private tutors to teach children and other royal family members. In some affluent families learned elderly members taught other members and children. This was the very first concept of home schooling. During the 18th century majority of the European people were devoid of formal schooling. Most of them preferred and practiced the home tutoring or home schooling in the comforts of their homely atmosphere. By 19th century public schooling became a recognized popular practice in imparting education. During 1960’s public school movement had to face oppositions from the people who preferred home schooling. According to them formal schooling ruined or was harmful for the children as it affects their effectiveness and potential socially, physically and mentally. They argued that the unique thought process of a child is adversely affected by the group educational system at school. In 1960, Rousas John Rushdoony began to oppose public school system and strongly advocated the home schooling system. He became an apostle of home schooling and became a strong witness in Home School Legal Defense Association in court cases. Soon home schooling got a legal exception or option in many of the developed countries where the parents can give home schooling for their children as an alternative education system.

Home schooling is more effective for children who are specially challenged where they get more attention and preference unlike public schools. Several statistics and research show that home trained children are equally or at times more competent than the students who got standardized education from conventional schooling systems. Home schooling is also considered as parenting style. In remote place or rural areas home schooling is more beneficial than the school system. Today home schooling is popular like e- learning courses. It practiced not only by the specially challenged students but also by the students who wanted to have education in a different aspect. One of the basic problems faced by home schooled students is at the time of higher education or at the time of college entrance. More specifications need to be clarified by as home tutored student in the admission formalities in higher education.

Even among these odds home school is a boon to students who can’t afford today’s expensive education systems.

Education Plays an Important Role in Life

Education plays an important role in the life of a person. The basic form of education began from the man’s search for knowledge. In his quest for unveiling the secrets and truth of the world he began to learn several things that were unknown to him. The knowledge he learned and accumulated through various sources were the earlier of form of education. Gradually the person who had more insight about knowledge began to share it with his fellow members and the method of teaching evolved. In different countries during the earlier centuries education was imparted in different forms. Ancient education system was based getting knowledge directly form the teacher in the oral form. The knowledge perceived from the teachers in the oral form was recorded in manuscripts.

The concept of education gradually began to acquire wide aspects including learning of skills, habits, and behavior of a group of people or community and with the invention of letters and symbols the oral language began to have written forms that were recorded by the visionaries of the ancient time for the future generations. Through the education system they transcend the knowledge they acquired to the next generation. The basic purpose of education is thus defined as the system of imparting or duplicating the knowledge form one generation to the next generation. Education is considered as science by ancient philosophers and thinkers. The educational pattern depends on the transmission of knowledge based on culture, civilization and behavioral aspects of a community or human race.

The concepts of education according to the historians are traced back to millions of years back or to be more precise according to historical evidence in the end o f1770. By the middle of the 17th century education among the societies became an integral part of the culture. Soon education systems confined to small groups of teachers and students developed into universities. The largest ancient university was established for the very first time in India in 427 AD. Ancient India was known for its Gurukul system of education. The students used to live with the Guru or the teacher until he finished learning or when the guru is satisfied that his student learnt everything he taught. In ancient Greece Aristotle and Plato were considered as great teachers and their teachings are foundation for education system in most of the countries across the world. In ancient India sages or “Rishis” were considered as teachers who even taught kings. The drawback of ancient Indian education system was that it was concentrated and confined in the circle of affluent section in the society. Education was a taboo topic for the Indians who belonged to low class. The Greek and the Roman system of education during the medieval period gained attention in Europe. In the Middle East region Islamic culture and scriptures made a new system of education based on religious standards. The Islamic science and mathematics began t spread far and wide from Iberian Peninsula, Indus, Almoravid dynasty and Mali Empire.

After the renaissance education gained more acceptances that made the people think that it is the base for a cultured society. The invention of printing press made the publication of books instead of manuscripts was a land mark in the history of human race. The education system through schools began to be popular all over the world.

Education is given prime importance during the modern period. In addition to the knowledge acquisition today education is imparted mainly for securing a profession. A child is trained from school onwards to focus in his studies for securing a job or profession. The other aspect of good education system is that is provided only for the fortunate ones in the world when an unfortunate sector in the remote part of the world is still deprived of the privilege of education.

Society has as set of rules and standards that is pursued by the people for having a disciplined life. The rules and standards create law which is a higher level of discipline. The most apt theory for heinous criminals is the biblical theory of “Eye for Eye and tooth for tooth.”

Education plays an important role in every aspect in an individual’s life. Education is considered as the foundation stone of success. A proper form of education has great impact in one’s life. For some experience in life is the greatest education. They believe that system of education prevailing today is not sufficient for learning. But it is an agreeable fact that education is an inevitable factor that no body can deny. The earlier form of education was when students went to the teacher’s house or place for learning. Later the concept of school education was introduced where teachers began to teach a group of students in schools. School education became a must in a student’s life where he is taught the basic or elementary lessons. After the school a higher level of education is imparted from the colleges.

The college is defined as the place for higher particularly professional education. It is an organized body of teaching specific vocational and professional courses. The term college is used in various names in the western countries. University and college are used as interchangeable terms in US. In UK, Canada, Australia and common wealth nations including India use the term college for higher education after primary and secondary school education.

In UK there are collegiate universities where degrees are awarded for students. The colleges are usually a part of these universities and they do not award degrees like universities. The colleges in UK are considered as imparting several types of education or courses. The college is considered as a pre higher educational institution. For higher education universities are chosen and there exists a term for higher education “going to university”. Different faculty departments are seen in universities that offer various kind of higher education. University of Edinburgh, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge is some of the world famous universities. These universities provide all facilities for the students including their accommodation, tuition and other facilities including library for the purpose of learning. The examinations are conducted by the universities. Various degrees are also granted from these universities after the successful completion of studies.

A university college can prepare the students to appear as candidates in other universities. They impart higher education and degrees but do not have the university status. In US college is a part of university but often the term college is termed as a under graduate educational institution. Some secondary school is often referred as junior colleges. Before the classes’ students have to pay the fees for their course. There are several options for payment of fees in US. The students can avail loan or grants, scholar ships cash or as combined form of these options. Another peculiarity of US colleges is there is not a national standard. The universities are termed as institutions that impart under graduate or graduate education. The four year based curriculum in liberal arts is offered by liberal arts colleges. Undergraduate levels of instructions are given in these colleges with facilities for research. These colleges offer bachelor degree. The colleges that provide two year courses are often termed as junior or community colleges.

In several other countries the education system offers secondary school education. These secondary schools are termed as colleges or title as colleges is given to them. In Australia Title College is given to educational institutions or school run independently unlike the state school. Even though under various names college exists the main focus of college is to impart or provide adequate education to the students irrespective of country variations or definitions. The government of every country is responsible in providing educational opportunities for students as a good education system creates a good citizen who is dutiful about his responsibilities towards him and to the country. The future of a country is always safe in the hands of citizen who had practiced a good education.
