Facts and Scope of Google Glass

Google Glass is wearable technology type with OHMD (Optical Head-Mounted Display). It development has been done by Google with mission of production of ubiquitous mass-market computer. Google Glass provides display of information in hands-free smartphone-like format. Communication of wearers with Internet by means of voice commands language naturally.

Google began Google Glass’s prototype sales to “Glass Explorers” qualified in US on 2013, April 15 for time limited for $1500 ahead of public availability on 2014, May 15 for similar costs.  On 2015, January 15, Google made announcement that they will no longer produce prototypes of Google Glass but will remain committed for product development.

Facts: Google Glass is slimmer and smaller than older previous designs of head-mounted display.  Prototype of Google Glass is same as eyeglass standard with replacement of lens by display of head-up. In middle of 2011, there was prototype engineering by Google which weighed 3600 g. But till 2013 they became lighter as compared to sunglass average pair. Sergey Brin wore Glass prototype to Foundation Fighting Blindness conference held in 2012, April 5 in San Francisco. In 2012, May Google provided demonstrations on how there will be usage of Google Glass for shooting video for 1st time.

Google begin providing 4 frame prescription choices at price of $225 and 1 free with any novice Glass unit purchase. Google enters in partnership with Eyewear Company of Italy namely Luxottica, owners of Oakley, Ray-Ban and different brands for offering additional designs of frames. In 2014, June, Government of Nepal adapted Google Glass for poacher tackling of herbs and wild animals of Chitwan International Park and different parks that are listed under sites of World Heritage. Gurkha Military presently takes usage of Google Glass for tracking birds and animals in jungle.  In 2015, January, Google ended Google Glass Explorer project (Beta Period of Glass).


Software Application: Google Glass uses present applications of Google like Google Maps, Gmail, Google+, and Google Now. Applications of Google Glass are applications free made by 3rd party developers. 3rd party applications caused announcement at SXSW (South by South-west) which includes Skitch, Path, Evernote and The New York Times.  On 2013, March 23, Google made release of Mirror API for developer allowance for starting the apps making for Glass. In service terms it is told that there will not be putting of ads by developers in apps or fee charging. A representative of Google stated The Verge will change this in future. Numerous companies and developers have built glass applications which include facial recognition, photo manipulation, social network share like Twitter and Facebook, new apps, exercise and translation.

MyGlass:  Google offered MyGlass which is companion of iOS and Android App. This allows user to manage and configure device.

Activation of Voice: Google Glass is controlled by usage of “voice actions” apart from touchpad. For activating Glass, wearer tilts his head 30 degree up (that is altered as per preference) or conducts tapping of touchpad and tells “OK Glass”. As Glass activates wearer tells action like “Take picture”, “Hangout with person”, “Record video” and “Google ‘What was Wikipedia founding year?”.

Praise and awards:

In 2012, November, Glass got recognition by Times Magazine as 1 amongst “Best Inventions of the Year 2012” together with inventions like Curiosity Rover. After visiting Cambridge University by Eric Schmidt who was Chairman of Google in 2013, February, professor of Wolfson College namely John Naughton made praises to Glass. He compared it along with achievements of networking and hardware pioneer Doughlas Engelbard. Naughton had written that Engelbart had a belief that machine must do what they do best and prevent humans from giving their best.
