ELVA – Advanced Electric Vehicle Architectures

Mobility sustainable is one amongst grand challenges socially. This is so key topics for automotive industries. This believes in demands on-going of mobility individually. For meeting strict increased traffic growing and targets of emission in urbanized areas, then electro mobility are promising ways. Aim of ELVA projects is bringing line technology’s customer expectations and options for 3rd electric vehicles generations. There is development of vehicle’s innovative architectures which is exploiting fully freedoms in designs being resultant from electric drive trains. After 2 and half years, project ended in 2013 year May month. Results documented on websites serves research communities as future references. Project: Whilst 1st mass produced electric vehicles had been arriving on roads of Europe, mostly all models intended originally being driven by combustion engines. Like electric vehicles, they hold battery and electric motor in place of fuel tank and combustion engine. Such modifications, needs adoptions extensively for integrating batteries in safe and sound manners. Results are reinforcement necessary measuring hindrances for fully exploiting new freedoms in design. This is provided by vehicle’s electrification.

Over 2 and half years consortium of Europe consist of 7 partners having architectures developed for electric vehicles designed particular for drives electrically. Project was known as ELVA. It had been coordinated by (ika) Institute of Automotive Engineering of RWTH Aachen University. 4 of large Europe’s automobile suppliers and manufacturers like Continental, Fiat, Volkswagen and Renault participated in projects. Consortium had been supplemented by Swedish Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre SAFER and IDIADA Automotive Technology from Spain. Project received supports by lots of associations in Europe. This was accompanied by tasks with own experts of theirs. Ambition of 1st project phases was getting better understandings of customer requirement for electric vehicle thereby generating overview detailed of electric vehicle technologies. The drives are available till 2020 year. Based on this, important concepts for city battery driven cars had been developed in creative phases. 3 of these ideas had have been then chosen being designed with details. Then it is evaluated and analyzed afterwards with respect to many key necessary and needed factors. Special features of projects was designing contest where free lanced designers and designed studios and students and different interested parties could participate and take part.

Approach: ELVA project had been aimed for exploring concepts on vehicles being intended for mass productions by executions of broad scopes of conceptual designed studies. This was started by initial design establishment specifications. It was continued right by means of realistic but virtual detailed performance assessments of 3 full vehicle concepts. ELVA had been pre-competitive. It focused on design rules of EVs being launched by 2020. It provided platforms for dialogues between technology for future generation EVs and stakeholders being concerned with components developing. This is there with those involved in creation of those concepts which vehicles need whilst incorporating the technology and components. ELVA finally provided forums for broad communities beyond consortium of project by itself by means of networking with Research and Development (R&D) complementary projects. This is with supports of industrial Advisory Boards. It consisted of high leveled representatives. This is by means of execution of open EV designing competitions. It is through input direct collection from citizens of Europe and large company of Europe and fleet owners of SMEs. This is with regards to EVs expectations. Motivations: Together with energy cost increasing and emission targets stringent that aimed for 95 g/km CO2 emissions , requirement for steps changing in road vehicles propulsion technologies have become apparent.

This is valid especially for urban dense areas with heavy air qualities, high traffic volumes and noises and safety impacts on living environments of people.
